How we score filament
Each category uses a 1–5 scale. Half-points describe results between two levels. Overall score is the arithmetic mean of all five categories, rounded to one decimal place. All categories carry equal weight; overall value is one category, not a second overall score.
| Rating | Meaning |
|---|---|
| 1 · Poor | Fails the intended test or requires major intervention. |
| 2 · Below expectations | Repeated problems limit usable results. |
| 3 · Acceptable | Usable results with ordinary tuning and some limitations. |
| 4 · Very good | Reliable results with minor limitations. |
| 5 · Excellent | Excellent results across the documented tests with no significant observed issues. |
What each category measures
- Print quality: surface finish, detail reproduction, stringing, bridging, and visible defects.
- Layer adhesion: bonding between layers under a documented manual or measured test. It is separate from bed adhesion. Manual checks are qualitative, not certified strength measurements.
- Consistency: repeatability across prints, color and extrusion stability, winding and feed behavior, and observed variation within the tested spool.
- Ease of printing: setup effort, tuning, drying needs, bed adhesion, and successful printing at documented settings.
- Overall value: useful results relative to a stated USD price and spool mass, considering waste and preparation. Free samples are assessed against a disclosed retail price, not treated as free value.
Repeatable testing checklist
- Record the exact filament line, material, color, spool / batch when known, test date, printer, and nozzle.
- Record drying and storage, nozzle and bed temperatures, speed, layer height, and any changed settings.
- Use a surface/detail test, an adhesion test, and a practical part. Document at least three prints or repeated trials, including failures. Compare similar materials under comparable conditions and explain any differences.
- State the price, spool mass, pricing date / source, findings, and limitations. Explain each score through the test notes and value assessment.
- Identify purchased filament, provided samples, and sponsorships. Product links disclose potential commissions. Publish only after all five ratings and the test record are complete.
These are editorial reviews by B's 3D Printing, not customer aggregate ratings. Sponsorship or a provided sample is disclosed and does not set the score.
